Book Review: Take It Personally by Claire Hopple

by Christie Chapman

“In this pressure-cooker world, where so many seem to be chasing after the top dogs, the glitz and clout, the Big Five, the “template for success”—Take It Personally, in its unbothered originality, is refreshing. “A+.”

“Trapped Within Our Sanity”

from Wander Lines by Michael Templeton

“The world in which we live is so deeply sick, so inherently insane, that what appears to be normal or sane is the real insanity. Only a sick, insane person could exist in a world of such monstrous cruelty.”

The Russian Brontosaurus-Cow as Seen with Faceted Vision: On Vladimir Sorokin’s The Sugar Kremlin

by Eric Vanderwall

The Sugar Kremlin presents another fine entry in the catalogue of Sorokin’s works available in English. Although The Sugar Kremlin is a sequel in a loose sense, it is not a bad entry point for readers new to Sorokin, and Joshua Cohen’s interview with the author…is especially illuminating.”

Now accepting subs for Blood+Honey’s special poetry edition “Rules of Verse: Poetry Inspired by the Velvet Underground”

Edited by Poetry Editors Damon Hubbs and Sean G. Meggeson

The Velvet Underground is often considered one of the most influential bands of all time—far ahead of its time, inspiring countless other bands while at the same time expressing the dark, edgy and quirky sides of human experience. The Velvets remain a touchstone for the poetic imperatives of experimentalism, exploration of self, and artistic risk-taking. How has the band inspired you?

Blood+Honey wants your VU poetry that celebrates the band. Your poetry might focus on a song, album or explore any of the various personalities in the band or related to it like Lou, John, Mo, Andy, or Nico. Your poetry might be inspired by the Velvet’s New York landscape or their infamous Exploding Plastic Inevitable. The options are wide and deep—surprise, shock and beat us down with your knowledge of Velvet lyrics and lore.

Use of lyrics from any Velvet Underground songs in your poetry is strictly verboden —doing so will incur the wrath of the copyright gods, but referencing songs or album titles is fine.

Send us up to three poems of no more than one page in length in one document with one poem per page. No reprints—original work only.

urbex/rurex and the picturesque: chasing what cannot be there

by Michael Templeton

“As the smarties of eighteenth/nineteenth century Europe were working out how we experience the sublime, the beautiful, and the picturesque, other smarties were coming up with theories of the human mind, a logic of the psyche, or a psychology. As you might imagine, the Freudians have had loads of fun with this shit.”

CNF Spotlight on…

“Grief Dumplings”

by Georgia Williams

“Hannah's roommates knew I had come for a funeral the last time I was in town. I wondered why they didn’t say anything to me, maybe tell me how sorry they were for my loss. …Is there a time limit for that kind of conversation? I know there isn’t one on thinking about it. Is there one on talking about it?”

Note from the EIC…

Hello All,

I am keeping it short and sweet this month. We have a lot of great things in store for you in terms of poetry, fiction, CNF, and more for December. The schedule is jam packed, especially with some of the coolest fiction and CNF around. We’re pretty proud of it.

Blood+Honey would like to give some love to our incredible editors for barreling through submissions to nominate for Best of Net, Pushcart, and Best Microfiction on some very tight deadlines. We hope you enjoy the links to the nominated pieces this month. Narrowing subs down to just a handful was incredibly difficult as we love every piece we publish. Many thanks to all out contributors for making Blood+Honey what it is.

We are planning on some additional content this month, which has not been scheduled yet. so stay tuned and check out the site and our socials for updates.

Enjoy!
