Interview with EIC and Author Colin Gee

by David Estringel

I am constantly surprised by the quality and ferocity of the writing cropping up in my favorite lit mags, and for me that is the start and end of the game. If it is good art, we have already won

Appearing SOON in September!!!

Interview with Author JD Clapp

by David Estringel

“I don’t worry about trying to stay “on brand.” I write flash, short-stories, CNF, and poetry. I like pushing myself as writer and believe you can learn from experimenting.”

Blood+Honey is excited to open subs soon for a special poetry edition in early October:

Rules of Verse: Poetry Inspired by the Velvet Underground

Edited by Damon Hubbs and Guest Editor Sean G. Meggeson

The Velvet Underground is often considered one of the most influential bands of all time—far ahead of its time, inspiring countless other bands while at the same time expressing the dark, edgy and quirky sides of human experience. The Velvets remain a touchstone for the poetic imperatives of experimentalism, exploration of self, and artistic risk-taking. How has the band inspired you?

Blood+Honey wants your VU poetry that celebrates the band. Your poetry might focus on a song, album or explore any of the various personalities in the band or related to it like Lou, John, Mo, Andy, or Nico. Your poetry might be inspired by the Velvet’s New York landscape or their infamous Exploding Plastic Inevitable. The options are wide and deep—surprise, shock and beat us down with your knowledge of Velvet lyrics and lore.

Use of lyrics from any Velvet Underground songs in your poetry is strictly verboden —doing so will incur the wrath of the copyright gods, but referencing songs or album titles is fine.

Send us up to three poems of no more than one page in length in one document with one poem per page. No reprints—original work only.

***Visit our site and follow us on social media for the open call for submissions. It will be here before you know it.***

DON'T MISS IT!!!

DON'T MISS IT!!!

“Ted knew he would never see her again, but he would have a story to tell himself, from time to time, and that was something.”

Chapter 1 from Writer-in-Residence Tom Stuckey’s novella Of Nurture’s Wildness (Book III) drops 9/9!!! A lovely blend of longing, desire, and urban decline against a dystopian backdrop.

Disappearing Virtual Poetry Chapbook…

The Domestic Lesbian

by Shannon Mcnicholas

“Previous owners left broken glass, / dilapidated bird houses, rusty tomato cages / in overgrown grass to decompose. / As you tilled, pieces of their wreckage floated to the surface.”

Note from the EIC…

As Blood+Honey approaches its fifth month of publication, lots of changes have come (and are coming) down the pike. We are overjoyed and amazed by the support from our followers on social media and submitters from across the globe and remain eager in bringing you yet another month of amazing content.

We have had to say goodbye to Poetry Editor Jessica Heron, who has been with us from the start. While this is a loss for Blood+Honey, we know that we will see some amazing things coming from her in the future. Columnist Dylan Desmond will also be pulling back as a contributing columnist to focus more attention to his professional life, which is going splendidly, but hopefully he will be back from time-to-time with some of his thought-provoking literary essays, which we love so much. We consider ourselves lucky to have had Jessica and Dylan as a part of the Blood+Honey family for as long as we have and will miss their talent and commitment to the magazine and its readers.

Other changes include:

  • Blood+Honey plans on moving its submissions over to Submittable in October to make submission management and communication between editors more efficient. Submitting will still be free, of course, and rolling submissions will continue to be open 24/7, 365 days a year.

  • Also, planning is currently underway for Blood+Honey Press. Yes, we are getting into the publishing game. The planets have aligned in our favor and, after some teasing on social media, the time has come to move forward (though slowly). We don’t have a launch date yet as there are lots of ducks that have to be put in a row with Blood+Honey and its sister lit mag The Argyle Literary Magazine. Likely, we will start off with publishing chapbooks and selling magazine merch, eventually publishing larger literary works. Ideas are being thrown up into the air; we will see what lands. Stay tuned.

  • Lastly, September 2025 (this month) will be the last time Blood+Honey will publish Disappearing Virtual Chapbooks. We picked a great one for our DVMC “swan song,” so give it a read (accessible on via the “Home” page).

If you are new to Blood+Honey, take a moment and explore our site to see what we have to offer. Apart from poetry, fiction, CNF, and digital art, we also deliver feature pieces, columns, writing/visual art from nine Writers-in-Residence, as well as exclusive content only found here on Blood+Honey, such as the popular serialized chapbook, Jethro’s Daughter, by Allister Nelson. There’s something for everyone.

None of this could happen without our dedicated, talented, and very cool editors. They’re the best, so make sure to give them some love. Last—but not least—our contributors remain truly awe-inspiring and their content mind-blowing. Couldn’t do any of this without ‘em.

Follow us on our social media platforms and visit us daily to see what is NEW at Blood+Honey.

Enjoy!

…the cruelty of the inexhautible

by Michael Templeton

“The digital sex bot can stand in for live nude girls, but we always know it is not a live nude girl. But with AI, as long as we feed it what it needs, which is humanity, it will increasingly appear to be a live nude girl.”

Coming…

Blood+Honey Press

Planning is currently underway for Blood+Honey Press, the publishing arm of Blood+Honey (or maybe Blood+Honey will be its lit mag arm…Hmmm). Concepts are being entertained. Ideas thrown up into the air…where they land…who knows, but rest assured it will be awesome.

Likely, chapbooks and magazine merch will be the primary focus on Blood+Honey Press when it launches, moving on to larger projects later, but it is too soon to tell for now until details get worked out. The “not knowing” is absolutely titillating. No?

For now, stay tuned to learn more as things develop!!! Follow us on X @BloodHoneyPress and Instagram @bloodhoneypress. Coming soon to Bluesky!
