Now accepting subs for Blood+Honey’s special poetry edition “Rules of Verse: Poetry Inspired by the Velvet Underground”

Edited by Damon Hubbs and Guest Editor Sean G. Meggeson

The Velvet Underground is often considered one of the most influential bands of all time—far ahead of its time, inspiring countless other bands while at the same time expressing the dark, edgy and quirky sides of human experience. The Velvets remain a touchstone for the poetic imperatives of experimentalism, exploration of self, and artistic risk-taking. How has the band inspired you?

Blood+Honey wants your VU poetry that celebrates the band. Your poetry might focus on a song, album or explore any of the various personalities in the band or related to it like Lou, John, Mo, Andy, or Nico. Your poetry might be inspired by the Velvet’s New York landscape or their infamous Exploding Plastic Inevitable. The options are wide and deep—surprise, shock and beat us down with your knowledge of Velvet lyrics and lore.

Use of lyrics from any Velvet Underground songs in your poetry is strictly verboden —doing so will incur the wrath of the copyright gods, but referencing songs or album titles is fine.

Send us up to three poems of no more than one page in length in one document with one poem per page. No reprints—original work only.

Send submissions via Submittable on our “Submissions” page.

Note from the EIC…

Blood+Honey is approaching its sixth month of publication, and I can hardly believe it. Doesn’t seem like that much time has gone by, but we, indeed, have been bringing our readers some of the best experimental poetry, fiction, CNF, and digital art out there for almost half a year now. I consider the pub to be very lucky that it has had such notable support from our contributors and followers on social media. Never mind all the amazing subs that bless our subimissions inbox on the regular.

B+H submitted its first-ever nominations for Best of the Net a few days ago, which was pretty exciting. This month, we’ve created a special section on the homepage to showcase the pieces we selected for those who missed them the first time. Hope you all enjoy.

Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the open call for our special poetry edition “Rules of Verse: Poetry Inspired by the Velvet Underground,” edited by Damon Hubbs and Guest Editor Sean G. Meggeson. We love the Velvet Underground and can’t wait to see how this iconic group will inpire folks. Subs openned today (10/1), so send us you “little darlings.”

Lastly, this month we move to Submittable to manage our submissions. We are currenlty working out some details, but as soon as our account is set up, we will move all subs to Submittable immediately. We will keep everyone posted via social media and the website.

None of this could happen without our amazing editors. I’m very proud of this bunch and their dedication to bringing folks solid content. They amaze me every day.

Follow us on our social media platforms and visit us daily to see what is NEW at Blood+Honey.

Enjoy!

Coming Attractions for November

Coming…

Blood+Honey Press

Planning is currently underway for Blood+Honey Press, the publishing arm of Blood+Honey (or maybe Blood+Honey will be its lit mag arm…Hmmm). Concepts are being entertained. Ideas thrown up into the air…where they land…who knows, but rest assured it will be awesome.

Likely, chapbooks and magazine merch will be the primary focus on Blood+Honey Press when it launches, moving on to larger projects later, but it is too soon to tell for now until details get worked out. The “not knowing” is absolutely titillating. No?

For now, stay tuned to learn more as things develop!!! Follow us on X @BloodHoneyPress and Instagram @bloodhoneypress. Coming soon to Bluesky!
