deeper heat

by Hiram Larew

Deeper Heat

Before coughs and aches end

Remember their new views --

Remember how beds of tissue feel

Or what salves do

Or what juice in the hand says

Yes make the most of feverish hums

That come with closed eyes

And enjoy the wisdom that calls like shawls

All gathered around

A deeper heat

Even savor those damp cloths

That become loving cousins

Of greeting

Because after the spell

What will be left to do

Yes

Expect to miss syrups

And those Need anything? murmurs

Or the nearby ice water pitchers

That watch and care

And before it goes

Be sure to ask the flu and its shivers

If there’s anything more

Or even better to expect

After tonsils or broth
