to measure a life with

by Jordan Trethewey

“With illusions of someday / cast in a golden light / No dress rehearsal / This is our life”

- The Tragically Hip, Ahead By a Century

To measure a life with

coffee spoons, or other quantitative illusions,

self-delusions, like wealth of

wisdom, power to someday

cheat the bony hand, drag loved ones along, cast

doubt on fallibility, frailty, in

this biological comedy of trial and error, find a

loophole in the divine golden

fence surrounding a blinding glare of light.

No

one knows how to properly dress

for the final rehearsal—

this

danse macabre to Death’s violin is

just bleak paper to shield our

life.
