Artist’s Statement:
Robert Fleming (b. 1963) is a visual poet and digital artist from Lewes, Delaware. Robert follows his mother as a visual artist and his grandfather as a poet. My inspiration was my 2015 photography visit to Virginia Beach, VA. I chose the Wyndham Hotel because I have only created digital art for two buildings and enjoy returning to newer subjects.
In 1974, at 11 years old, the movie Earthquake was released which was rated parental guidance. I nagged my father to take me to see it. The special effects Academy Award were created by Albert Whitlock. He created images of buildings before and after they were earthquaked. My goal was to make the hotel look like it was earthquaked and on the verge of falling down.
The tools I used were a digital Nikon camera and digital art software: Canva. For the building with lesser destruction, I used two filters: classic black and white and slice. To add more destruction, I used four filters: black and white, Pixel art, slice, and liquify smear.
For the monsters, the filter liquify wobble creates the oval.
· For the Black and White Eyed Orb the three (3) filters were black and white high contrast (turning a color image into black and white), voxel art (makes your image look like Lego), and liquify wobble max (1).
· Similarly, for Black and White Cyclops #1, I used five filters (5). The same three filters that I used for Orb plus two more: liquify melt and liquify smear with amount and scale to the max (1)
Did I accomplish my goal? Yes. The Wyndham Hotel image: Black and White Pixel art Sliced Smeared Wyndham Hotel Virginia Beach, VA, 2015, looks earthquaked. Not even prayers could keep the hotel vertical.
